JEAN R. BEERS FY08 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Our Jean R. Beers annual scholarship program was implemented in 1984. Ms. Beers, SWE Connecticut Section member, had the vision and started raising the scholarship funds with personal resources. Ms. Beers is the Section's inspiration for this program which provides encouragement and financial assistance to support young women in their pursuit of an education in engineering and related technical and scientific disciplines. In the same spirit today, our scholarship program provides direct and meaningful assistance to women students who might otherwise not be able to complete their studies.
Our scholarship program is very important in our goal of reaching parity at the workplace; female enrollment in engineering colleges is still only about 20%, contrasted to 50% in medicine and law. Currently our Section grants multiple scholarship awards through the generous sponsorship of Connecticut corporations furthering our efforts to support these deserving students to become part of the next generation of engineers and scientists.
SWE Connecticut Section invites qualified women undergraduate students to submit an application for our Jean R. Beers tuition-based Scholarship Awards of $1500. The number of scholarships offered during FY08 will depend upon the amount of donations received and the number of qualified applicants who apply. The FY08 scholarship award is made for the Fall semester of 2008. The Scholarship recipient will need to submit proof of her acceptance to enroll in the degree program specified for the Fall semester of 2008 prior to receiving the monetary award.
Applicants are judged on the basis of academic preparation, academic ability, activities, work experience, interest in engineering, communication ability, leadership potential, drive and determination. Attention is also given to individual financial need and completeness of the application. Minimum selection criteria have been established consistent with SWE's mission.
All application materials (application, essay, and transcript) must be completed and postmarked no later than January 31, 2008. The recipient will be notified in February 2008. The Scholarship recipient will be invited to attend a local SWE Connecticut Section Scholarship Award Banquet meeting scheduled for March 2008 where she will be formally presented with the award.
Eligibility for the Jean R. Beers Scholarship is limited to undergraduate female students pursuing baccalaureate degrees in Engineering, Computers, Mathematics or Physical Science who will be enrolled full-time in the Fall of 2008. Applicants must have completed at least 30 credits by June and plan to continue their education for the school year 2008-09 in order to qualify. In addition, applicants must reside or attend a college/university within the SWE Connecticut Section, which is bounded by the following zip codes: . 06039, 06068-69, 06079, 06401, 06403-05, 06409, 06413, 06418-19, 06424-26, 06430-32, 06436-37, 06440, 06442-43, 06460, 06468, 06470-73, 06475, 06477-78, 06482-84, 06487-88, 06490-91, 06497-98, 06702-10, 06712, 06716, 06720-26, 06751-55, 06757, 06762, 06770, 06776-77, 06779, 06783-86, 06793-96, 065***, 066***, 068***, 069*** Download the Application File The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is a non-profit educational and service organization.
